From Gordmans to Good Times

Construction on Spare Time Entertainment’s Omaha Location is Complete.

In the heart of West Omaha at 172nd and Center Streets, the former Gordmans department store has a new resident. It’s now home to Spare Time Entertainment’s newest location. As the dust settled and the paint dried, the vibrant energy of this family-fun facility came to life.

An Entertainment Destination

The 50,000-square-feet space has transformed into a luxury bowling alley, complete with 14 open bowling lanes and eight VIP lanes. Spanning 4,000 square feet, the arcade zone boasts new games such as Mario Kart, basketball and Virtual Reality. And it’s been buzzing with activity since its opening Nov 30, 2023.  From arcade classics to the immersive experiences, Spare Time Entertainment is a haven for families. If you’re seeking a night out that offers something for everyone, this place should be at the top of your list.

In addition to the games and activities, the venue features a 1,376-square-foot conference room for gatherings and special events. And there’s a 1,780-square-foot restaurant and bar with chef-crafted dishes and signature cocktails. It truly is a complete entertainment destination.

“It’s our hope that Spare Time brings an experience to the West Omaha area that’s second to none,” explained Tim McGinley, owner of Spare Time Entertainment. “With everything we offer, we hope every guest has a very enjoyable and fun time. Between the unique bowling experience and game room, to laser tag and escape rooms, to great food and drinks there’s no shortage of fun to be had.”

Building Luxury

Construction on the project began in March 2023 and took about seven months to complete. After pouring concrete and framing, wood flooring was installed for the bowling alley. And there’s specialitly lighting throughout, including an aesthetic water feature in the center of it all. From the hand-painted laser tag room to the custom-cut bar, Ronco’s team worked diligently to meet the highest standards of luxury and functionality the project owners were expecting. Ronco’s attention to detail is evident in the craftsmanship throughout the space.

“The project construction went really well, and it’s been nice having a great ownership group to work with,” shared Jim Bracker, the Ronco Project Manager. “As with any construction project, there were a few changes, but we worked together with them to make their vision happen. For me, this project has been a nice change of pace from the multi-family projects I’ve worked on recently. I definitely hope we get another opportunity with this group.”

In a world where family-friendly spaces are highly sought after, Spare Time Entertainment is poised to become a staple in the Omaha community. Every corner of the new venue is designed to create lasting memories for friends and family.

Building Luxury for Private Jet Travel

Jet Linx unveils its flagship private terminal.

Jet Linx set out on a journey in June 2021 to construct a state-of-the-art flagship private terminal at Eppley Airfield in Omaha, Neb. And in October 2023, that journey landed by unveiling a luxurious private terminal, designed like their brand itself — like no other.

Ronco Construction was hired as the construction manager for the project and worked alongside the Jet Linx team and architecture firm HDR. And that project was no small endeavor — the facility sprawls 70,000 square feet. It includes a private terminal, with a 6,600-square-foot glass-enclosed executive lounge, meeting space and expansive double hangar with 28-foot-high doors.

“We brought Ronco into a very delicate and politically-charged project,” explains Brad Henderson, CEO of Western LLC, the owner’s representative for Jet Linx. “Zak Olsen and his preconstruction team were an absolute pleasure to work with. We had very open and honest conversations leading up to formalizing the partnership and the entire Ronco team stood by every promise that was made.”

Construction officially began July 2022. The facility’s design was complex — demanding meticulous attention to detail and precise material selection. Code compliance was of the utmost importance and involved extensive research, consultations with experts, and continuous monitoring to meet aviation and building regulations.

“This project was a demanding, yet a rewarding endeavor,” explains Lance Claussen, Project Manager for the Jet Linx project. “It was a pleasure to be a part of something dynamic and complete an airport project, which was a first for me.”

This project showcases the result of collaboration and dedication, turning an ambitious dream into reality. The Jet Linx Private Terminal is more than just a building — it’s a symbol of how you can accomplish new heights of excellence when individuals work together toward a common goal.

The luxury facility is a combination of function and amenity. Private jets now occupy the two hangers, which are 29,204 square feet each. Inside the terminal, guests have access to a 350 square-foot waiting area with large, comfortable leather seating, an espresso and cocktail bar, and kitchen lounge. In addition, there are multiple offices and support spaces, a flight and pilot lounge, and second-floor private meeting space.

“This flagship facility stands as a beacon of luxury and excellence, exceeding all expectations and setting a new standard for executive airport facilities,” explains Claussen.

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Omaha, Jet Linx is a global personal aviation company providing aircraft management and jet card membership through local service at 21 locations nationwide. The company is an IS-BAO Stage 3, ARGUS Platinum Elite, and Wyvern Wingman PRO safety-rated operator, a distinction held by less than one percent of operators globally. Transforming a Legacy

Refreshing Smith Kroeger’s Old Mill Office

Smith Kroeger, an Omaha staple for marketing and advertising services, has called the Old Mill area home since the late 1970s. To celebrate their 60-year anniversary, the agency decided it was time to get a fresh new look. This renovation created a more comfortable, efficient workspace. Sara Wilson, Executive Vice President of Client Services and PR at Smith Kroeger shares her thoughts on the project.

A Modern Makeover

A key highlight of the space is the modern breakroom and kitchen area. It features a bar with specialty lighting and new brick-patterned tile. The contemporary and welcoming feel makes it the perfect place to hang out. The main conference room was updated with new lighting and wall treatment, along with a table with plug-in features and logo artwork. And the exterior of the building was given fresh paint and new landscaping.

“The upgrades provide a modern, professional look that not only impresses clients but is a positive for our employees and overall culture. It’s not only an investment in the building, but an investment in the comfort of everyone who works at Smith Kroeger,” said Wilson.

The renovation also included updates to the HVAC system and more efficient windows. While these are practical benefits, they contribute to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space.

A Refreshing Reflection of the Brand

Throughout the interior and exterior, you can’t help but notice the vibrant pops of Smith Kroeger’s signature brand look.

“The building exterior, kitchen remodel, and conference room update all create a great refreshed look that reflects Smith Kroeger’s modern, forward-thinking brand,” said Wilson. “I have heard many nice compliments from vendors and clients about our building’s new exterior and how it stands out (in a good way) from the rest. It’s refreshed and provides a great first impression.”

It’s clear every aspect of the renovation has been thoughtfully designed to showcase the agency’s commitment to innovation and creativity.

60 Years of Excellence

The renovation of Smith Kroeger’s office space is more than just a physical transformation. It’s a reflection of their commitment to excellence.

“Smith Kroeger has a long and successful history in the advertising and marketing business,” Wilson explains. “From design, branding, and video work to websites, digital tactics, and traditional media buying, we provide a full-service partnership to our clients. We’re proud of our stability and growth over six decades in business and are excited to continue to grow in Omaha for our clients around the country.

Celebrating Careers in Construction

Learn what it’s like to work in the construction industry.

Each October there’s a nationwide campaign to inspire the next generation of professionals for the construction industry. Careers in Construction month brings awareness to the vast opportunities the construction industry has available. It’s one of those industries that offers great job stability, provides opportunities for advancement and pays well. And it’s not just those who want to build projects either. There are roles in accounting, human resources, technology, marketing, safety and more necessary to run construction companies and projects

From the office to the field, here’s seven different viewpoints of what a career in the construction is all about.

Accounting Manager

“I was lucky enough to come across an entry level job early in my professional career. I even tried leaving for health care and came right back,” said Ashley Nelsen, Accounting Manager. “The people are great — laid back and fun, but still know how to work hard and be professional. My advice to anyone looking at a career in construction is to communicate well. Don’t be afraid to get on the phone to have a conversation, treat everyone with respect, and be excited (and willing) to learn from your peers and leaders.”

Business Development

“The team dynamic necessary in the construction industry is my favorite aspect,” said Becky Hans, Director of Strategic Partnerships. “Everyone wears a different hat, and to be successful you must respect and appreciate each member that makes up the team. It takes many talents, skills and personalities to make a project successful. This industry has a lot to offer. If I wasn’t doing this though, I think being a sportscaster on ESPN or Fox Sports doing sideline interviews with some of the country’s most talented athletes. That as a career seems amazing. Maybe in the next life.”

Construction Foreman

“Construction is what I’ve wanted to do since it was little,” said Heath Hoefener, Foreman. “It’s what my dad does so I guess it runs in the family. It’s cool being able to build anything and there’s always something to build so there’s some security. But the best part is seeing the finished product and being able to take pride is something that’s really good.”

Field Engineer

“I like to say construction chose me,” explains Haba Manjoro, a field engineer who’s working toward a degree in Construction Management. “I originally wanted to be an electrical engineer, but ended up in some construction classes and loved it. You get to see people’s vision come to life and there’s a good balance between field work and being in the office.”

Project Engineer

“As someone who started in the construction industry later in my career, I wish I would’ve chosen it earlier,” said Ceri Klopp, Project Engineer. “I originally went into residential design but got bored doing the same thing over and over again. I like that my role now is so broad, and every day is a different day. The fast-paced work environment and deadlines keep me motivated.”

Project Manager

“While construction has become a 24/7 occupation, I love watching my team and I’s efforts bring a structure to fruition,” explains Mark Lawlor, Senior Project Manager. “I’ve loved construction ever since I was a kid. And if asked to do it all over again, I’d still choose this career. It’s a constantly evolving industry and one where your effort dictates your success. So, whether you’re a designer working on the plans or a carpenter putting work in place, never stop learning and always put your best foot forward.”

Superintendent

“This job can be very demanding, but there’s nothing like the satisfaction of seeing your project come to life and be able to drive by it for years to come,” explains Travis Robertson, Superintendent. “I’ve always enjoyed creating things in my head, putting it on paper and building it in real life. This career is what I’ve always wanted to do. If you’re looking at this industry for a career, a trade school is a great place to get started. But if school isn’t your thing, there are plenty of opportunities to get the on-the-job training and experience you need to succeed.”
